HASIK Catechetical Forum Series Kicks Off

Mar 12th 2008

The CFA Catechetical Resource Center (CRC) has initiated “Hasik”, a new series of short catechetical forums aimed at helping catechists and educators to be more effective sowers and nurturers of the Word. The first forum, titled “The Use of Komiks in Catechesis”, was held at the Lagerwey Hall (CFA Auditorium) in Sta. Mesa at 3:00 in the afternoon of January 25th, 2008.

CRC’s main program activity is the Annual Catechetical Congress (held in two batches in April and May), where catechists learn and share new methods in furthering the work of evangelization. “Hasik” is an offshoot of CRC’s mandate to address the need for continuing education among catechists. As an added perk, participation to the forum is free and will be offered every two months on a Friday afternoon.

Serving as resource person for the first forum was Mr. Jericho Natividad, Editor-in-Chief of Gospel Komiks and other faith magazines of CFA. CRC Head Ms. Evelyn Alinea, in a brief introduction to the project, explained how every Christian is a catechist, who must take to heart the challenge of spreading the Good News. She compared this evangelistic task of every catechist to that of being mimics of God’s Word.

In a compressed yet comprehensive presentation, Mr. Natividad outlined the production of CFA’s Gospel Komiks. He touched on the essential features, characteristics and benefits of the comics medium as an effective academic supplementary material and tool for evangelization. He also traced the history of comics in the Philippine setting to drive home the point that such a secular medium can serve the Church’s mission.

Participating schools included the Sta. Catalina College in Biñan, Laguna, Sacred Heart College in Lucena City and Holy Family Academy. Catechists from Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of the Abandoned Parishes also attended the forum. Groups like Evangelion Foundation and ERDA were present.
