Bokashi: Environmental Management System for Solid Waste
Composting has been used for many years in waste management and agriculture and one method of composting is fermentation. Bokashi composting is different from traditional composting because it ferments organic waste materials. Organic waste includes food scraps and any biodegradable materials. The organic waste is broken down by microorganisms using bran and microbial inoculant with effective microorganisms. During the fermentation process, bokashi produces juice with nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Aside from its juice, once the organic waste material have been decomposed, it turns into fermented organic matter/bokashi soil. The soil and juice produced are good for farming, it make the soil conducive for growing fruits and vegetables because of its nutrients and beneficial microorganisms.
Bokashi is an environmental management system for solid waste because it utilizes the principle of waste segregation and 3R’s (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle). In addition, it follows the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. Solid waste management is important because it lessens waste production and disposal. Bokashi reduces waste production and disposal because of segregation, 3R’s and composting.
In addition to its environmental implication, bokashi is also a tool for poverty alleviation through livelihood and food security. People living in poverty may use bokashi as a source of livelihood because of farm products produced by high quality organic soil. On the other hand, it would address the issue of food security. Access to food has been an issue for people living in poverty because of they have inadequate resources, with bokashi, people can now grow their own food and have access to it. Fruits and vegetables are expensive and people living in poverty will not prioritize costly food. Hence, growing your own food through bokashi is one of the solutions to address food security of marginalized sector.
