On May 24 to 26, 2017, the Communication Foundation for Asia gathered 15 youth leaders for a training-workshop on Social Movement.

For the first three workshops, they were given basic inputs on good governance, leadership, the role of the youth and multimedia skills for political engagement. The latest workshop armed them with the capability to transform their advocacy into a structured and sustainable social movement.

CFA President Fr. Fil Pelingon, MSC gave the inspirational message. He stirred-up the interest of the youth leaders by saying: “You are going to address social issues that you are passionate about.”

Aksyon Kabataan 2017 participants: the advocates of our future

These were the topics discussed and resource persons during the three-day training-workshop:

  • “Social Movement 101” and “Advocacy 101” by Ms. Tinay Mercurio, CFA Publications Department Head;
  • “Christian Leadership and Organizing Towards Transformation of Society, Social Movement and Advocacy” by Fr. Ben Alforque, MSC, CFA Training and Spirituality of the Heart Department Head; and
  • “Creative Communications” by Ms. Pie Fenomeno, CFA Vice President for Operations

The lectures were supported by workshops wherein the youth leaders identified three major advocacies they would like to work on, and then planned and developed these into concrete programs. As a culminating activity, they were able to create the following social movements:

  • Lend a Hand to Save the Earth (Environment);
  • Loser No More (Anti-Bullying); and
  • Food is Life (Health and Wellness).

CFA will be monitoring the progress of these movements onwards.

Who We Are

Communication Foundation for Asia is a pioneer in development communication. It was established in 1968 as a non-stock, non-profit organization, but its origins go way back to 1960, when the Social Communications Center was born with the publication of the Philippine Catholic Digest. Both organizations were founded by the Dutch missionary, Fr Cornelio Lagerwey, MSC, in collaboration with his mission partner Genaro V. Ong.
