Gospel Komiks for June/July 2009 Focuses on the Face of Christ

gospelkomiks

The cover story of this edition of Gospel Komiks focuses on the Face of Christ. As a subject, the face of Christ has always fascinated artists all over the world. Paintings, sculptures and other works of art have depicted Jesus in various ways but always reappropriating his image in the context of different faith communities.

The cover page is a rendering of Christ’s face reminiscent of Byzantine icons. However, this one is different essentially in that the face of Jesus is itself made up of many smaller human faces. We could only say that the artist is trying to visually tell us the message and is reminding us that indeed, Christ is in people; in each one of us and in all of us. The artist wants us to remember Christ’s words, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done unto me.” The love of God can never be separated from the love of fellow human beings. Nothing human is alien to us. Thus the joys and hopes, the sufferings and distress of our fellow human beings, especially those of the poor, are also ours. Jesus showed the love of neighbor especially the poor, as the standard by which people will enter God’s Reign and will judge us over and above all creeds and beliefs.
