Emotions over facts

June 2022

The Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), in partnership with Communication Foundation for Asia and the MIL Innovation Hub, conducted the 4th National Forum on Media and Information Literacy with the theme: “Addressing crises through media and information literacy” last January 22 and 23, 2022 via Zoom. The webinar was a success since 62 participants attended and positively responded to the event.

One of the highlights of the webinar was what Mr. Ron F. Jabal, the CEO of Pageone Group, the speaker addressed, “In a post-truth environment, there seems to be a sharp decline in the importance of facts, in favor of emotion. Repetition of unfounded statements, unsupported assertions, even misleading images seems to be the “new” truth. And in this social milieu, people make decisions based on gut feel and emotional bond - sometimes anger - despite the facts.” This statement is very evident on social media, where people often argue, immersed in their feelings and emotions, that they forget to fact-check their statements.
