Notre Dame of Kidapawan College played host to the recent CFA seminar-workshop on Values Integration. It was the first such seminar conducted by CFA for the schools in Mindanao.

The workshop aimed to help teachers understand, define and apply the mechanics and process of integrating values in academic subjects through the HEAP method. HEAP stands for Human Evocative Approach/Experiential Approach. The method involves initiation into values, learning the rules needed to function in this mode of relating to people and seeking the development of the learner to grasp underlying principles. It also involves the ability to apply these rules intelligently and the disposition to do so.

The workshop focused on several processes, including the formulation of topics or subject matter into three different levels, guidelines in values integration, celebration of life and application to life. It ended with individual lesson planning while integrating values in a particular subject. To facilitate a more active involvement in the workshop, the participants were divided into grade school and high school levels.

The two-day seminar workshop was conducted by Ms Evelyn Alinea, who is the head of CFA’s Catechetical Resource Center. Two of CFA’s Mindanao staff, Ms Roda de la Cruz and Ms Teresa Curay, were on hand to give support to the CFA resource person.

At the end of the workshop, the evaluation by participants showed their appreciation and positive assessment. Participants thought that the seminar objectives were attained, and needs answered. There were overwhelming requests to conduct a follow-up seminar.

The workshop is part of the “Hasik” and “Flying Team” seminar series conducted by CFA’s Catechetical Resources Center and Training Department with the support of Aid to the Church in Need in Germany. The project enables CFA to offer a number of workshops on media for evangelization and values education, which are held at CFA in Sta. Mesa, Manila or in CFA partner schools and dioceses in the provinces.
