AUG 21ST 2007

Media as Catalyst for Electoral Reform” is the theme of an electoral reform forum on September 4, 2007 at the Pius XII Catholic Center Conference Hall in Manila. Spearheading the event is the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) in partnership with the Communication Foundation for Asia.

Ambassador Henrietta de Villa, PPCRV Chairperson, announced that the Forum will be highly interactive, featuring input from resource speakers, tri-media panel reactions, focus group discussions and strategy planning for future collaboration. Among the main speakers will be Mr. Luis V. Teodoro, Deputy Director of CMFR (Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility), who will discuss “The Role of Media in Philippine Elections”, and Bishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle, D.D., who will expound on “Faith and Fire: The Transformative Power of Mass Media in Philippine Elections.”

The focus group discussions between forum participants will explore key emerging issues in media and elections. Participants are expected to come from the media, civil society and church groups.

Some key features of the Summit are:

  • • Linking and contrasting electoral experiences from various media sectors;
  • • Bringing together media thought leaders to develop new perspectives on their role in Philippine elections;
  • • Providing specific insights into the strengthening of local media into a collaborative undertaking; and
  • • Drawing up a roadmap for continuing joint efforts at electoral reforms.

The forum is part of CFA’s citizenship education project following its production of the 3-part voters’ education programs “Vote for U”, which were broadcast on TV Maria and ABC-5 before the May 2007 elections.
