The Asian Network of Women in Communication (ANWIC) has just concluded its annual regional conference in Tianjin, China. Titled “Beyond Media Monitoring: Strategies for Gender Advocacy in Asia”, the conference was held last November 24-27 at the Tianjin Normal University.

This is the second regional conference organized by the new ANWIC secretariat, which is now based at the Communication Foundation for Asia in Manila. Last November 12-16, 2005, a similar event was held by ANWIC in Manila, on the theme “New Directions for Media Monitoring and Advocacy”.

Ms. Teresita Hermano, CFA Executive Director and ANWIC Coordinator, was the main resource person and facilitator of the workshop. She was also the keynote speaker at a special symposium with more than 200 university students and Chinese journalists. Professor Bu Wei, lecturer at the Tianjin Normal Univeristy College of Journalism and a Steering Member of ANWIC, served as the conference convenor in China.

Other local partners for this regional event were the Institute of Gender and Social Development, the College of Journalism and Communication of Tianjin Normal University, and the Women’s Media Monitoring Network of the Capital Women Journalists Association. Participants from Vietnam, Bangladesh, Japan, Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia came. They were all part of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), a study held every five years of the portrayal and representation of women in the news all over the world.
