Communication Foundation for Asia and Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy Hosts 5th National Forum on Media and Information Literacy

The 5th National Forum on Media and Information Literacy, organized by the Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA) and the Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), brought together educators, professionals, researchers, and advocates to discuss the integration of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) across the curriculum.

Held on January 20-21, 2023, both in-person at Lageryway Hall and online via Zoom, the forum aimed to promote the importance of MIL and its incorporation in educational institutions.

Under the theme “Align and Adapt: Integrating Media and Information Literacy Across the Curriculum from Basic to Higher Education,” the forum highlighted the need to align MIL with various subjects and educational levels. This emphasis on MIL aimed to foster critical thinking, digital skills, and responsible media consumption among learners.

Keynote Speakers

The forum featured keynote speakers Dr. Roger Chao Jr. and Tessa Jolls. Dr. Chao discussed the role of MIL in ASEAN Community Building, emphasizing the curriculum’s impact on achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Tessa Jolls shed light on building resilience against disinformation and media manipulation through the school curriculum, emphasizing the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the media landscape.

Panel Sessions

Panel sessions explored topics such as international experiences in integrating MIL, assessing developments in MIL integration in teaching and learning, and policies enabling MIL integration in education. Notable panelists included Frank Baker, Dr. Jeff Share, Chris Sperry, Dr. Jose Reuben Alagaran II, and President Rene Manlangit, who discussed various aspects of MIL integration and the role of libraries in supporting it.

Plenary Sessions and Workshop

Plenary sessions provided in-depth discussions on MIL integration in specific subject areas. These sessions were led by distinguished speakers who explored MIL integration in science education and social studies education. Additionally, a workshop on Lesson Plan Development equipped participants with practical tools and strategies for incorporating MIL concepts into their teaching practices.
